His ways are higher than mine…And thank the Lord for that!

For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9

I’ve heard it said many times that the Lord works in mysterious ways.  Have you ever experienced an answer to prayer but not in the way that you expected God to answer?  I have several times.  It’s always a blessing.  But I think there is a very specific reason that God chooses to answer in ways that we might think are strange or odd.

A couple of recent examples of this kind of answer to prayer are as follows:

I have had trouble with my back for a little over a year now, including various pains in my neck and shoulders and it was making daily life a painful challenge.   I did not have the money for a chiropractor and didn’t think there was much the local clinic could do for me in any timely fashion, so I simply prayed, “Lord, please fix my back!”  fully expecting Him to make a way.  About two days later, the phone rang early in the morning before I was out of bed.  I jumped out of bed in a hurry to answer the phone and didn’t take the time to put on my glasses before running through the house toward the phone.  Not being able to see well, I tripped on a box that was in my path spraining my toe, and fell in an awkward position across a kitchen chair wrenching my back into the shape of a “C” all the while thinking, “Nooo!  Now my back is totally ruined!  I’ll be in so much pain from this!”  Well, to make a long story short, I was so focused on how much pain I kept expecting to wake up in from the fall, that it took me a full three days to realise that I had no more pain at all!  The fall did not make my back worse, it fixed it completely!  Thank God!  And I never did figure out who the early morning mystery caller was…..  LOL

Another example was a little over a year ago, when our youngest daughter was born.  We had been praying specifically for the swift, simple, safe and healthy delivery of our baby with as little medical intervention as possible.   I spent the first 24 hours of labor in such light and irregular contractions that I didn’t even realise I was in real labor yet!  After having 5 previous babies, one would think I would know when I was in labor!   A little after midnight, the baby came so quickly that we never even got the chance to leave home and go to the hospital before she was born.  And she came quickly, with no difficulties and was by far the simplest delivery I had ever experienced.  And no medical intervention, all exactly like we had prayed.  It didn’t happen like we expected but we got everything we hoped for and it all turned out terrific and for His glory.

I think that God many times chooses to answer prayers this way because, like the verse in Isaiah above, His ways simply are higher (wiser and better) than ours and this is one way He choses to show us that very concept.  Sometimes I have prayed for Him to do something specific and then I even go so far as to tell Him how I think it needs to be done!  How rediculous!  When I am advising God on how to answer my prayers am I really fully trusting Him with the results?  Have I really taken my hands off of the matter?  No, not really.

This is not to say that we should not pray in a very specific manner.  After all, God opens “doors,” not walls.  It just means to pray specifically for what you need and leave it in His hands on how He chooses to meet that need.  His ways are gloriously higher (and wiser) than ours.  Pray to Him and give Him the opportunity to show you just how much higher His ways are.  Ask Him to be glorified in your life.  Ask Him to bless you in ways that will make others see His goodness and desire Him, and then leave the ways He answers in His hands.  Sometimes the answers are even hard, but still trust His ways…He always makes it worth it.   Blessings to you.  🙂
